Additional Event Details

"Strange Fruit" is the third in a series of four films that are a part of the DCC's first African-American Film Festival.  These films celebrate African-American culture and its influence on the film and entertainment industry.  These screenings are open to the public and admission is free.

On Saturday, February 23, the short film, "Strange Fruit," written and directed by Warren Booker, Jr. (See photo), will screen at 2 p.m., just before the full length film entitled, Jeremy Brooks" by writer/director Kyle Miller.  The DCC is honored that Booker will be present as our special guest to introduce his film. After the film, he will also answer questions from the audience about the making of the film "Strange Fruit."

"Strange Fruit" explores several relevant contemporary themes-- respect, grief, single parenthood and unity.  It also conveys a message about respect for authority and the importance of showing greater consideration for how the decisions one makes can impact the lives of others.

This film was inspired by the poem of Abel Meeropol and the legendary singer Billy Holiday song (by the same name).  It provides a unique contrast and comparison between the lynchings of blacks in the South between 1865 and 1968, and the recent controversial deaths of unarmed African-American males in this country at the hands of police officers.

This 20-minute short film allows viewers to hear the rarely discussed viewpoints of police officers, as well as parents and community members. A remix of the song "Strange Fruit" arranged and written by Booker is also featured in the film.

Selected for the 2018 Sunshine City Film Festival in St. Petersburg, Florida, the film was chosen as the 'Standout Indie Short Film of 2018.'  It placed third in the Kingdomwood International Film Festival Short Film Category in Atlanta, Georgia. For more information contact the Delta Cultural Center, 870.338.4350, or Richard Spilman, DCC education coordinator at richard.spilman@arkansas.gov.
